Skill Deep-dive

Master the Reading Module.

The reading test is not a test of comprehension; it is a test of vocabulary and time management. Learn to scan for synonyms, deconstruct complex sentence structures, and conquer True/False/Not Given logic traps.

IELTS Reading Text Breakdown

Understanding the Reading Texts

Section One

Factual & Descriptive

Usually focuses on factual information, everyday topics, historical events, or straightforward scientific descriptions. The language is generally clear, making answers easier to locate through careful scanning and close reading.

Section Two

Discursive & Analytical

Often presents research, historical developments, or analytical discussions. You may need to identify main ideas, compare viewpoints, understand the organisation of the text, and match information to specific sections or people.

Section Three

Complex & Argumentative

Typically features dense academic writing with abstract ideas, sophisticated vocabulary, and complex arguments. Questions often require inference, recognising the writer’s views, and synthesising information from multiple paragraphs.

The Core Skill

Speed Matrix

You have 60 minutes for 40 questions. Reading every word is a guaranteed path to failure. Success relies on your ability to skim for structure and scan for synonyms.

Goal: 1.5 Min / Question

IELTS Question Types Breakdown

Question Types & Strategies

The IELTS Reading test includes a range of question types, each with its own approach. Learn how to recognise them, avoid common mistakes, and use the right strategy to answer questions more quickly and accurately.

True/False/Not Given

Many students lose marks on this question type because they rely on their own knowledge instead of the information in the text. Learn how to spot the difference between False and Not Given and avoid the most common exam traps.

Core Strategy

Chronological Order: Answers usually appear in order within the text. Use Question 1 and 3 to help locate Question 2.

The False Test: To be ‘False’, the text must explicitly state the direct opposite of the prompt. If it just talks about a related topic without contradicting it, it’s ‘Not Given’.

The “Feeling Wrong” Trap: Don’t mark something False just because it sounds off or isn’t confirmed. If the text doesn’t directly contradict the statement, it’s ‘Not Given’, not ‘False’.

Beware Absolute Words: Words like ‘all’, ‘never’, ‘always’, or ‘only’ are a red flag, always verify against the text rather than assuming False automatically.
