What is IELTS Academic?

IELTS Academic is the version of the test used for entry to bachelor’s and master’s programs, and for professional registration bodies (medicine, nursing, engineering and others) that require proof of English proficiency.

Academic vs. General Training: only two of the four skills differ. Listening and Speaking are identical in both versions. Reading and Writing are Academic-specific: Academic Reading uses long-form texts from books, journals and newspapers, and Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe visual data rather than write a letter.

02 Is this for you

Who should take IELTS Academic?

There is no formal entry requirement for IELTS Academic, but candidates should have the level of English needed to achieve their target band score and meet the requirements of universities, institutions, or professional organisations.

Typical candidate: Teenagers and adults who need to demonstrate their English proficiency for university admission, professional registration, or academic purposes. IELTS Academic is commonly taken by learners at B1–C2 level, depending on their target band score and requirements. There is no official minimum age, but IELTS recommends that candidates under 16 take the test only when necessary.

04 Recent change

The Move To Computer Delivery

2026 Update

Paper-based IELTS is being phased out

Paper-based testing is being discontinued globally, with the final paper test date set for 27 June 2026. From that point, Listening, Reading and Writing are delivered on computer everywhere. Speaking stays a face-to-face interview, unchanged. If you’re preparing now, build in practice typing your Task 1 and Task 2 responses and navigating an on-screen Reading passage, not just handwriting them.

Take Academic IELTS Online

You can now take the Academic IELTS test online from the comfort of your own home or another private location with a stable internet connection. The test has the same format, content, timing, and scoring as the test taken at an official IELTS test centre, with your Speaking test conducted live via video call with a certified IELTS examiner. Before booking, check that your chosen university or institution accepts IELTS Online scores. Learn more about IELTS Online on the official IELTS website

05 On the day

What to expect on exam day

A few logistics to sort out beforehand so nothing catches you off guard.

01

Arrive early with valid ID

Arrive at least 30 minutes before the test starts. Bring the same valid passport or national ID document used during registration, as your details must match exactly.

02

Complete registration checks

Your test centre will verify your identity, take a photograph, and may collect biometric information depending on local requirements. Follow all centre instructions before entering the test room.

03

Leave personal devices behind

Phones, smartwatches, and electronic devices must be switched off and stored as instructed by the test centre. Personal items are usually kept outside the test room or in a designated area.

04

Know what is provided

The test centre provides the necessary materials, including pencils, erasers, and answer sheets for paper-based tests. For computer-based IELTS, familiarise yourself with the on-screen tools, including highlighting, note-taking, and the word count feature.

05

Understand the test order

Listening, Reading, and Writing are completed on the same day, with no breaks between these sections. Speaking may take place on the same day or be scheduled separately depending on the test centre.

06

Prepare for the Speaking test

The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner. It includes three parts and may be held before or after the other sections. You should arrive prepared to communicate naturally and confidently.

07

Manage your time carefully

During the test, follow the instructions from the invigilator and monitor your time carefully. Make sure you answer all questions and transfer your answers correctly when required.

08

Stay calm and follow instructions

Listen carefully to the examiner and test supervisors, ask if anything is unclear before the test begins, and focus on demonstrating your English skills.

06 Scoring

How the band scale works

Each of the four skills is scored from 1 to 9, in half-band steps. Your overall band score is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest half band.

07 Results After The Test

Results, retakes and validity

Results: computer-delivered tests typically return results within a few days; paper-based results (where still offered before the June 2026 cutover) take longer.

One Skill Retake (OSR): many computer-delivered test centres now let you resit a single section instead of the whole test, if you’re close to your target but one skill let you down. Check availability at your local centre.

Score validity: your Test Report Form is valid for 2 years from your test date. Plan your test date with application or registration deadlines in mind, not just your target band.

08 Your Plan

How to prepare?

A practical order to work through, adjustable to how much runway you have before test day.

Your 5 Steps To Success

01

Take a diagnostic

Establish your current band per skill before you start, so study time goes where it’s actually needed.

02

Work skill by skill

Build Listening and Reading technique alongside Writing and Speaking practice, rather than one skill at a time.

03

Get Professional Help

Get professional help with expert guidance, personalised feedback, and targeted practice to improve your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills for Academic IELTS.

04

Target your weakest criterion

Within Writing and Speaking especially, identify which of the four scoring criteria is capping your band, and drill that specifically.

05

Sit full timed mocks

In the final weeks, practice under real time pressure, ideally on-screen given the move to computer delivery.

09 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about the IELTS Academic test.

Can I retake IELTS Academic if I don't get my target score?

Yes. There is no limit to the number of times you can take General IELTS. You can book another test whenever a suitable test date is available at your chosen test centre.

What happens if I don't achieve my required band score?

Your IELTS result shows your performance across the four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. If you do not achieve your target band score, you can continue preparing and retake the test to improve your result.

How often is IELTS Academic available?

IELTS Acaemic tests are available throughout the year, with test dates offered regularly depending on your location and whether you choose paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS.

Does the IELTS Academic test cost the same everywhere?

No. The test fee varies depending on your country, test centre, and test format. Each authorised IELTS test centre sets its own pricing.

Can I choose between paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS?

Usually, if your local centre offers both formats. Availability depends on what that centre runs each session. However, paper based IELTS is being faced out since 2026.

Can I retake only one part of the test?

In many locations, yes. IELTS One Skill Retake allows eligible candidates to retake one section of the test (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) instead of repeating all four sections. Availability depends on your test centre and location.

How long is my IELTS Academic result valid?

IELTS results are generally valid for two years from the date of your test. Some organisations may have their own requirements, so always check with the institution you are applying to.
