What is C1 Advanced CAE Exam?
C1 Advanced, formerly known as the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), demonstrates that you have the advanced English language skills needed to study at university, work in professional environments, and communicate confidently and effectively in English-speaking settings. It is widely recognised by universities, employers, and government organisations around the world as proof of high-level English proficiency.
The Cambridge Advantage: Unlike other standardized English proficiency tests, a Cambridge English qualification never expires. Once you earn your certificate, it remains valid for life.
02 Is this for you
Who should take C1 Advanced CAE?
There’s no formal entry requirement, but the exam is built for a specific point in a learner’s progress.
Typical candidate: Teenagers and adults working at CEFR B2/C1 level who need proof of advanced English for university study, professional careers, or international employment. Cambridge sets no minimum age, but most candidates are 16 and older, as the exam is designed for learners who have developed advanced English language skills.

05 Test delivery
Digital vs. Paper-based
Format Choice
Cambridge English Qualifications Digital
You can choose to take C1 Advanced on paper or via computer (Digital). The digital format offers several advantages: you receive your results faster (typically in around 5–10 working days compared with several weeks for paper-based exams), you can edit your writing easily during the Writing paper, and you are provided with headphones with adjustable volume for the Listening paper. The Speaking test remains a face-to-face interview with another candidate and examiners in both formats.
06 On the day
What to expect on exam day
A few logistics to sort out beforehand so nothing catches you off guard.
01
Arrive early with valid ID
Get there at least 30 minutes before the start time. Bring a passport or national ID card that matches your registration details exactly.
02
Leave devices behind
Phones, smartwatches, and recording devices must be switched off and out of reach, or left outside the room entirely. Centres enforce this strictly.
03
Know what's provided
Paper candidates get pens and answer sheets from the centre. Digital candidates should get comfortable with the on-screen tools beforehand: highlighting, word count, and no spell-check.
04
Speaking is scheduled separately
It may fall on the same day or a different one, and is done with a partner. If there’s an odd number of candidates, one group of three is formed instead.
07 Scoring
The Cambridge English Scale
Your final result is calculated using the Cambridge English Scale. To achieve a C1 Advanced certificate, you need an overall score between 180 and 199. Exceptional performance can earn you a C2 level certificate, while scores below this range may receive a certificate showing achievement at a lower CEFR level.

Demonstrates C2 proficiency
B
Grade B (193–199)

C
Grade C (180–192)

09 Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what candidates ask most.
Can I retake C1 Advanced CAE if I don't pass?
Yes. Cambridge allows candidates to retake C1 Advanced as many times as needed. There is no official limit or required waiting period, although availability depends on your chosen exam centre and upcoming exam sessions.
What happens if my score falls into the B2 range?
Scores between 160 and 179 do not meet the C1 Advanced pass requirement, but candidates receive a Cambridge English certificate confirming achievement at B2 level.
