The Cambridge B2 First (FCE) exam consists of four papers: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, designed to assess the upper-intermediate English language skills needed for study, work, and everyday communication in English-speaking environments.

What is B2 First FCE Exam?
B2 First, formerly known as the First Certificate in English (FCE), proves you have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking country or study on courses taught in English.
The Cambridge Advantage: Unlike other standardized English proficiency tests, a Cambridge English qualification never expires. Once you earn your certificate, it remains valid for life.

Who should take B2 First?
There’s no formal entry requirement, but the exam is built for a specific point in a learner’s progress.
Typical candidate: Teenagers and adults working at CEFR B1/B2 level who need proof of English for university admission, employment, or a visa application. Cambridge sets no minimum age, but most candidates are 13 and older.

04 The exam
Format, section by section
The Reading and Use of English, Writing, and Listening papers are usually taken on the same day. The Speaking test is normally scheduled separately, either on the same day or within a few days before or after the written papers.

7 parts, 52 questions. Tests reading comprehension alongside your command of grammar and vocabulary (phrasal verbs, idioms, collocations).
Writing

2 parts. Task 1 is a mandatory essay (140-190 words). Task 2 is a choice between an article, email/letter, report, or review.
Listening
30 min + 2 min
4 parts, 30 questions. You will hear monologues and conversations. Recordings are played twice.
Speaking
14 min
4 parts. A face-to-face test completed with a partner and two examiners. Includes short questions, a long turn (comparing photos), and a collaborative task

Digital vs. Paper-based
Format Choice
Cambridge English Qualifications Digital
You can choose to take B2 First on paper or via computer (Digital). The digital format offers several advantages: you get results faster (in 5–10 working days instead of 4–6 weeks), you can easily edit your writing without messy erasing, and you are provided with headphones with adjustable volume for the Listening paper. The Speaking test remains a face-to-face interview in both formats.
06 On the day
What to expect on exam day
A few logistics to sort out beforehand so nothing catches you off guard.

Arrive early with valid ID
Get there at least 30 minutes before the start time. Bring a passport or national ID card that matches your registration details exactly.

Leave devices behind
Phones, smartwatches, and recording devices must be switched off and out of reach, or left outside the room entirely. Centres enforce this strictly.

Know what's provided
Paper candidates get pens and answer sheets from the centre. Digital candidates should get comfortable with the on-screen tools beforehand: highlighting, word count, and no spell-check.
04
Speaking is scheduled separately
It may fall on the same day or a different one, and is done with a partner. If there’s an odd number of candidates, one group of three is formed instead.
07 Scoring
The Cambridge English Scale
Your final result is calculated using the Cambridge English Scale. To pass at level B2, you need an overall score between 160 and 179. Exceptional performance can earn you a C1 level certificate.

How many times a year is the exam offered?
Paper-based sessions typically run several times a year; digital sessions are often available monthly. It depends on your local centre.
Does the exam cost the same everywhere?
No. Cambridge doesn’t set a single global price. Each authorized test centre sets its own fee, so cost varies by country and centre.
Can I choose paper or digital?
