The IELTS General Training Reading test assesses your ability to understand basic factual information, practical workplace documents, and descriptive or argumentative prose in authentic everyday English contexts.

Section 3 resembles an Academic passage, a long, continuous article of 800–1,000 words exploring a general topic in depth.

The 15-20-25 Time Allocation Rule
With 40 questions across 3 sections and 0 extra transfer time, strict time discipline is the single biggest factor separating Band 6.5 from Band 8.0.
Section 1: 15 Minutes
Spend max 15 minutes. Quick scanning of simple short texts. Write answers directly on the answer sheet as you go!
Section 2: 20 Minutes
Spend 20 minutes on workplace texts. Use sub-headings to pinpoint information efficiently.
Section 3: 25 Minutes
Spend 25 minutes on the complex passage. Requires deep paragraph analysis and argument tracking.
The “No Transfer Time” Trap: In IELTS Listening, you receive extra transfer time on paper. In IELTS Reading, you get ZERO extra minutes! If you write answers in your question booklet and fail to copy them to the answer sheet before 60 minutes expire, your score is 0.

True/False/Not Given questions trip up more candidates than any other format. Understand the strict logical boundary rules.
Strict Logical Rules
TRUE / YES
The passage explicitly confirms the exact idea in the statement. Synonyms and paraphrases are used, but the meaning is 100% identical.
FALSE / NO
The passage explicitly contradicts or states the direct opposite of the statement. The facts cannot both be true.
NOT GIVEN
The statement is neither confirmed nor contradicted. The text simply lacks sufficient information to be certain, do not assume or use external knowledge!
T/F/NG vs Y/N/NG Rule: Use TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN for factual texts (Sections 1 & 2). Use YES / NO / NOT GIVEN when evaluating a writer’s claims or opinions (Section 3). Do NOT mix up the terms on your answer sheet!

The Top 4 IELTS Reading Traps
Avoid these systematic distractor patterns engineered by test writers.
1. Extreme Modifiers Trap
Trap 1
Words in statements like all, always, never, only, essential, impossible change the meaning drastically. If the passage says “most staff,” a statement saying “all staff” is FALSE, not True!
2. Word Match / False Synonym Trap
Trap 2
Seeing exact words from the question inside a paragraph does NOT mean it’s the right answer. Distractors deliberately repeat passage words in wrong contexts to fool careless readers.
3. External Knowledge Bias
Trap 3
Answering based on what you know in real life rather than what is explicitly written in the passage. Base every answer 100% exclusively on the provided text!
4. Time Sink Traps
Trap 1
Getting stuck on 1 difficult question for 4 minutes. Every question is worth exactly 1 mark! If stuck, make a guess, mark it, and move on immediately.

Quick answers to the most common questions about the IELTS Reading test.
Do I get extra time at the end to transfer my answers?
No. Unlike the IELTS Listening test, there is NO extra transfer time in IELTS Reading. You must write or type all answers directly into your response sheet within the 60 minutes.
Why is the raw score requirement higher for General Training than Academic?
Sections 1 and 2 of General Training feature shorter, simpler real-world texts (advertisements, workplace guides). Because the texts are easier to process, IELTS requires more raw correct answers (e.g., 34/40 for Band 7.0 in GT vs 30/40 in Academic).
Can I write T or F instead of TRUE or FALSE?
Yes, examiners accept abbreviations like T, F, NG or Y, N, NG. However, writing the full word in capital letters (TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN) is strongly recommended to avoid any handwriting ambiguit
What happens if I write YES/NO for a TRUE/FALSE question?
Writing YES / NO when the question explicitly asks for TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN may cause your answers to be marked incorrect depending on test center grading software. Always use the exact terminology specified in the instructions!
Are answers always in order in the text?
For True/False/Not Given, Sentence Completion, Multiple Choice, and Short-Answer questions, answers always appear in chronological order in the passage. For Matching Headings and Matching Information, answers appear in random order throughout paragraphs.
