What is IELTS Listening Part 1?
Part 1 is a conversation between two people in an everyday situation. It tests your ability to listen carefully and find important facts, such as names, numbers, dates, times, and places.

Everyday Social Context
Scenarios revolve around routine inquiries: booking hotel rooms, registering for a sports club, renting an apartment, or reporting lost property.

Two Native Speakers
Features an inquirer (customer) and an information provider (receptionist, clerk, landlord). Features accents from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, or US.

Strict Factual Extraction

Follow the questions in order. Do not assume you should always read from left to right.
Short Answer Questions
Answer simple questions using 1–3 words.
Look for question words such as “How much?”, “What time?” or “Which location?”
Write the exact words you hear. Do not change or rewrite the answer.

Word Limit Strictness: If the prompt specifies “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND A NUMBER”, writing three words results in an automatic zero mark, even if the information is factually correct.

Proper Names
1. Alphabetical Spellings
Surnames, street names, and town names spelled out letter-by-letter.
- Key Traps: Vowels (A vs E vs I), J vs G, W (“double U”), double letters (e.g. “double R”).
- Strategy: Write letters immediately as uttered; do not wait until the end.
Numerical Data
2. Phone Numbers & Codes
Telephone numbers, postcodes, credit card digits, and reference numbers.
- Key Traps: “0” pronounced as “Oh”, “77” as “double seven”, teen vs ty (13 vs 30).

- DON’T write three words if the prompt specifies “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS”.

- DON’T leave answers blank—there is no penalty for guessing in IELTS!
- DON’T lose focus if you miss one answer; move immediately to the next question.
- DON’T write spelled-out words for large numbers if writing digits is cleaner.

Clear answers to frequent candidate questions regarding IELTS Listening Part 1.
Are upper and lower case letters important in Listening Part 1?
Spelling must be 100% accurate, but capitalization is flexible. Writing in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS (e.g. HIGH STREET, MONDAY, 14TH AUGUST) is recommended because it prevents deductions for missing capital letters on proper nouns.
How should I write numbers in Part 1?
Always write numbers as digits (e.g. “15” rather than “fifteen”). Digits save time, take fewer spaces, and prevent spelling mistakes. Both formats are accepted, but digits are much safer.
What happens if I write $50 when $ is already on the form?
If the dollar symbol ($) is already printed on the question sheet next to the blank line, writing another $ symbol (e.g. “$50”) is considered redundant and may result in a wrong answer. Only write “50”.
How do I avoid getting caught by speaker self-corrections?
Listen for marker words such as “Actually…”, “Wait a minute…”, “Oh, sorry…”, “Let me double check…”. Hold off writing down the final answer until the speaker confirms the detail or moves to the next item.
Can I use American or British spelling?
Both British English (e.g., colour, centre, cheque) and American English (e.g., color, center, check) are fully accepted. However, you must be consistent and spell words correctly according to one system.
