Before You Start
Passage 1 is the first part of the Academic IELTS Reading test and is generally the most accessible of the three passages. The text is usually straightforward, but you still need to read efficiently and locate information accurately.
For sentence completion questions, focus on the meaning of the sentence and use the surrounding text to find the answer. Pay close attention to the word limit, grammar, spelling, and whether the answer fits naturally into the sentence.
A weak approach:
Reading the whole passage slowly and trying to remember every detail before looking at the questions. This wastes valuable time. The Academic IELTS Reading test gives you 60 minutes for 40 questions, so you need to locate information efficiently.
A stronger approach:
Read the sentences first, identify the key words, then scan the passage for the relevant information. Once you find the right section, read around it carefully to confirm the answer and check that it fits grammatically.
Tip: In sentence completion tasks, the answer usually comes directly from the passage, so avoid changing the wording unnecessarily. Always check the maximum number of words allowed before you write your answer.
