Academic IELTS Reading Section 2 Practice

IELTS Academic Reading Passage 2 Practice: Read with a Strategy

A full Reading Passage 2 practice set: read the text, then work through matching headings, True/False/Not Given, and summary completion questions, the exact task types you’ll meet in the real exam.

Before You Start

Passage 2 sits in the middle of the Academic Reading test, harder than Passage 1, but not yet at Passage 3’s density. Skimming for gist first, then scanning for specific answers, works better than reading every word closely from start to finish.

A weak approach:
Reading the whole passage slowly, word by word, before looking at the questions.
wastes time you don’t have, Reading gives you 60 minutes for 40 questions, with no extra time to transfer answers.

A stronger approach:
Skim the passage for its overall structure first, then read each question and scan the relevant part of the text for the answer.
gets you to the right paragraph faster and keeps time in reserve for the harder question types.

Why This Exercise Matters

Why IELTS Academic Reading Passage 2 Practice Matters

Reading doesn’t reward beautiful sentences, it rewards finding the right information under time pressure. Every question type tests a different skill: matching headings tests overall comprehension, True/False/Not Given tests precise fact-checking against claims, and summary completion tests scanning for exact wording.

The problem it fixes

Many candidates lose marks on Reading not because they don’t understand the passage, but because they run out of time, misread a Not Given as a False, or get distracted by a plausible-sounding distractor. This exercise trains you to recognise those traps under realistic conditions.

How it improves Task Response

Many candidates lose marks on Reading not because they don’t understand the passage, but because they run out of time, misread a Not Given as a False, or get distracted by a plausible-sounding distractor. This exercise trains you to recognise those traps under realistic conditions.

The knock-on effect on your band

There’s no weighting in Reading, every correct answer counts equally, and there’s no negative marking, so an unattempted question is a guaranteed zero. Getting faster and more accurate on Passage 2 protects the time you need for the harder Passage 3, and a stronger Reading band pulls up your overall score just as much as any other section.

What to do Next

You’ve now practised reading strategically and answering three different Reading question types on one passage. The next step is applying this under timed, full-test conditions.

  • Review any questions you got wrong and identify which skill was missing — was it the heading match, the fact-check, or the exact wording?
  • Found the True/False/Not Given questions difficult? Revisit the difference between a false statement and a not given one before trying another passage.
  • Ready for the next step? Move on to a full timed Reading test to practise switching between all three passages under real exam conditions.
