Before You Start
Passage 3 is the final part of the Academic IELTS Reading test and is generally the most challenging of the three passages. The text may contain more complex arguments, academic vocabulary, and detailed explanations, so reading efficiently is essential.

A weak approach:
Reading the entire passage slowly and trying to understand every sentence before looking at the summary. This can use too much of your limited exam time, especially when working with a longer and more complex Passage 3.

Read the summary first, identify the key ideas and keywords, then scan the passage for the relevant section. Once you find the right part of the text, read it carefully and compare the possible answer with the grammar and meaning of the summary.
Tip:
In summary completion tasks, the correct answer may be expressed using different words in the passage and the summary. Look for meaning rather than identical wording, and always check that your answer fits grammatically and stays within the stated word limit.
