What is Academic IELTS Reading Section 2?
In Academic Reading Section 2 (Passage 2), you read an authentic academic or professional text of 700 to 950 words and answer 13 to 14 questions in approximately 20 minutes.

Time Management Strategy: Spending more than 20 minutes on Passage 2 leaves insufficient time for Passage 3, which is usually higher in vocabulary density. Aim for 18–20 minutes maximum.

Execution Steps for Passage 2
Follow this 4-phase sequence:
- S – Scan Instructions & Questions (2 mins): Read all question stems first to identify key terms, word limits, and question order (sequential vs. non-sequential).
- K – Key Word Mapping (2 mins): Highlight non-synonymizable markers like proper nouns, numerical figures, technical terminology, and dates.
- I – Inspect Paragraph Core Lines (4 mins): Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph to build a mental map of text progression.
- M – Match & Verify (12 mins): Tackle paragraph-level questions (Matching Headings) first, followed by detail-level questions (Completion, True/False/Not Given).
Goal: Complete 13–14 questions within 20 minutes with high accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions: Academic Reading Section 2
Answers to common student questions about managing Passage 2 under exam conditions.
Should I spend exactly 20 minutes on Section 2?
20 minutes is the recommended guideline. However, if Section 1 takes you 15 minutes, you can allocate 22 minutes to Section 2 or 3 depending on text complexity.
Do the answers in Section 2 always appear in paragraph order?
Questions like Summary Completion, Multiple Choice, and True/False/Not Given follow text order. Matching Headings, Paragraph Information, and Feature Matching do NOT follow text order.
What should I do if I am running out of time?
Focus on sequential completion tasks first where keyword scanning is fast. Save non-sequential Matching tasks for last, and never leave an answer bubble empty on your answer sheet.
Are American or British spellings required?
Both standard British and American spellings are accepted in IELTS Reading, provided you copy exact words accurately when required by instructions.
Should I read the entire passage first before looking at the questions?
No! Reading the whole passage in detail first wastes precious minutes. Skim the passage quickly (1–2 minutes) to get a general overview of paragraph topics, then read the questions first and scan back for answer target zones.
